Our client in NYC has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Controller / Controller!

Responsibilities:

Core Accounting & General Ledger Restructuring:

  • Take ownership of the General Ledger (GL), diagnosing structural inefficiencies and evaluating opportunities for improvement.
  • Establish, document, and enforce a rigorous month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing process that accelerates time-to-close while maintaining absolute accuracy.
  • Modernize our internal control environment, authoring the standard operating procedures (SOPs), financial guardrails, and segregation of duties.
  • Manage the execution of external audits, acting as the primary point of contact and ensuring all PBC (Provided by Client) lists and supporting schedules are bulletproof.
  • Prepare Internal financial statements, statement of cash flows and footnotes for each reporting period.

System Implementation:

  • Act as the hands-on operational steering lead for the evaluation, selection, configuration, and data-migration phase of a next-generation enterprise ERP system.
  • Map current manual spreadsheet dependencies and design automated, scalable workflows within the new systems to eliminate human error.

Accounts Payable (AP):

  • Oversee the entire procure-to-pay workflow, optimizing vendor onboarding, invoice approval routing, and expense management systems.
  • Evaluate systems and workflows and recommend opportunities to optimize and modernize our function.

Accounts Receivable (AR):

  • Supervise the order-to-cash process, ensuring billing accuracy, streamlined invoice distribution, and proactive collections management to minimize Day Sales Outstanding (DSO).
  • Establish credit policies, review aging reports, and manage the escalation process for delinquent accounts.

Payroll & Compliance:

  • Oversee the processing, funding, and tax compliance of multi-state corporate payroll operations, ensuring seamless integrations with ADP and GL systems.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax filings, corporate registrations, and regulatory reporting requirements.

Team Leadership & Evolution:

  • Assess, mentor, and upskill the existing staff across Core Accounting, AP, AR, and Payroll, setting clear KPIs and structural accountability.
  • Partner cross-functionally with FP&A, HR, Logistics, etc. and establish yourself as a thought leader to help solve some of the organizations biggest challenges.

 

Requirements:

  • 7–10+ years of progressive corporate accounting experience, with recent hands-on management experience as a Director of Accounting, Assistant Controller, or heavy Accounting Manager.
  • Active CPA
  • Expertise in US GAAP, including financial statement preparation and technical accounting is non-negotiable.
  • Experience executing at least one major ERP system implementation and a significant GL cleanup or restructuring.
